Cardiff on a Budget: A Fun and Affordable Guide for Student Adventurers

Hey everyone! I recently had the most incredible trip to Cardiff, the vibrant capital of Wales, and I’m here to share my epic adventure with you. From historic sites to cool cultural spots, Cardiff truly has it all. So, buckle up and join me on this exciting journey!

Day 1: Discovering Cardiff

Cardiff Bay: The Perfect Start

My adventure kicked off at Cardiff Bay, and let me tell you, it’s the place to be! The waterfront is buzzing with energy, perfect for a leisurely stroll. I was blown away by the Wales Millennium Centre – seriously, the architecture is stunning! I spent some time at Mermaid Quay, which is packed with waterfront dining and shopping. Treating myself to some delicious ice cream from Cadwaladers while soaking in the bay views was just what I needed. For a killer view of the whole bay, I hopped on the giant wheel – definitely a must-do!

Cardiff Castle: Stepping Back in Time

Next stop, Cardiff Castle. Wow, this place is like stepping into a time machine! The castle has been standing for over 2,000 years, and exploring it was a highlight of my trip. From the medieval keep to the lavish Victorian apartments, every corner has a story to tell. On a sunny day, the castle grounds are perfect for a picnic. And guess what? If you're a student, you can get in for just £12.50. Totally worth it!

National Museum Cardiff: A Cultural Feast

As an art and history lover, the National Museum Cardiff was a dream come true. The art collection here is incredible, spanning from the Renaissance to contemporary times. The natural history exhibits were equally fascinating, showcasing Wales’s diverse biodiversity. Best part? Admission is free! I spent hours here and left feeling so inspired.

Day 2: Beach Day – Barry Island or Swansea?

For my second day, I faced a tough choice: a day trip to Barry Island or Swansea. Both destinations offer beautiful beaches and unique experiences, but here's a little guide to help you decide.

Barry Island: Classic Seaside Fun

Barry Island is just a 30-minute train journey from Cardiff, costing £6 from Trainline. This seaside gem is perfect for a day of relaxation and fun. The sandy beaches are ideal for lounging, and the lively amusement park is full of classic seaside activities. Plus, the fish and chips here are legendary. If you're looking for a traditional beach day with a mix of excitement and relaxation, Barry Island is your spot.

Swansea: Coastal Charm

Swansea, about an hour away from Cardiff by train for £8, offers a slightly different vibe. It’s a charming coastal town with picturesque beaches and a vibrant atmosphere. Strolling through the quaint streets and enjoying the beautiful coastline makes for a lovely day. If you prefer a more laid-back experience with plenty of scenic beauty, head to Swansea.

Eats and Treats: Cardiff’s Culinary Scene

Asian Food Heaven

- Yukiyan Sushi: For sushi lovers like me, Yukiyan Sushi is a must-visit. The fresh and beautifully presented dishes are to die for. I especially loved the Yukiyan Roll with teriyaki-marinated eel and salmon. Pro tip: it’s super busy on weekends, so book in advance!
- Praya Thai: Craving some Thai food? Praya Thai has an extensive menu of spicy curries, fragrant soups, and delicious stir-fries. The Pad Thai here is a game-changer.
- Happy Lok: If you’re into Malaysian cuisine, Happy Lok is your spot. From savoury nasi lemak to tender satay, every dish is a delight.

Western Delights

- Bellini's Italiano Park Place: When I craved Italian, Bellini's was my go-to. Their spaghetti dishes are amazing, and the cosy ambience is perfect for a hearty meal.
- Fresh the Baguette Bar: For a quick and tasty bite, Fresh the Baguette Bar is ideal. Their smoked salmon baguettes are my favourite.
- Milkwood: For brunch or tea time, Milkwood is a gem. Their waffle with fried chicken is a must-try – a perfect blend of savoury and sweet.

Getting Around and Staying Over

Transportation

- Bus: Traveling from Coventry to Cardiff was easy. I grabbed a bus ticket for £30 via National Express. The journey took about 4 hours with a stop in Birmingham.
Train: Alternatively, a train ticket costs £40-£50 when booked in advance from Trainline, and the ride takes around 2 hours and 45 minutes with a transfer at Birmingham New Street.

Accommodation

I stayed at Sleeperz Hotel Cardiff, right in the heart of the city. It’s affordable and comfy – single rooms are £50, and sharing with friends brings it down to £25 per person per night. Perfect for budget travelers like me!

Budgeting My Trip

With careful planning, I managed to keep my two-day trip within my £150 budget. This included accommodation, food, transportation, and a few souvenirs. It’s totally doable and worth every penny!

So, that’s my ultimate guide to exploring Cardiff. Whether you're into history, culture, or just having a good time, Cardiff has something for everyone. I hope my experiences inspire you to plan your own adventure to this amazing city. Happy travels! 🏰🌊🍣
